Yesterday afternoon was one to be remembered for softball fans in Texas. This wasn’t your average Wednesday afternoon at the ballpark. Over in Denton, Texas, we witnessed the North Texas Mean Green pull off a jaw-dropper, a seismic upset, a walk-off grand slam that sent shockwaves through the college softball world!
Let's break it down. Number 13 Texas Tech, cruising, looking comfortable, up 5-0. NiJaree Canady, their ace, dealing, six strikeouts, silencing the Mean Green bats. But, as they say, that's why they play the game.
Bottom of the seventh. Canady exits, and then, the wheels came completely off the Red Raider wagon. A pitching carousel of freshman arms, Lincoln, Gonzales, Lindemuth, and North Texas? They pounced. Walks, doubles, singles, and then... BOOM! Riley McNemar, with the bases loaded, a zero-out grand slam! Left field, just inside the foul pole, a laser beam that erased a five-run deficit and sent the home crowd into a frenzy! 6-5, Mean Green!
You talk about a meltdown? Texas Tech, who were hitting everything in sight just days ago, held to a paltry .192 by the North Texas staff. And get this, their first loss to an unranked team since 2020! Talk about a stat that'll sting.
Gerry Glasco, the Tech head coach, was left puzzled after yesterday’s game. They hammered the ball in Lubbock, but today, they couldn't buy a hit when it mattered. And that bullpen? A complete collapse.
Credit to North Texas, though. They battled, they clawed, and they capitalized when Tech opened the door. Their first home win of the season, and their first ranked victory since 2023. This is what college softball is all about, folks!
Now, Tech heads to College Station, reeling, looking to regroup at the Texas A&M Tournament. Can they bounce back? Can they shake off this stunning loss? We'll be there to see what happens.
